Faba bean (Vicia faba) was domesticated in the Middle East and is a member of the "cool-season legume" group, more closely related to pea or lentil than to most beans. The seed is used both as a dry "bean" and as a green vegetable (both pods and young seeds). Faba beans are also important in crop rotations, as an early spring or winter crop that can fix large amounts of nitrogen.
